Record hike in bread in the EU

The Russia-Ukraine war led to a record increase in bread prices in Europe. In the EU, an average of 18 percent increase in bread came.

The economic effects of the Russia-Ukraine war are felt in food products as well as energy in Europe. Bread increased at a record level in the European Union, especially due to the shortage in grain supply.

In the news on DW; The European Statistical Office Eurostat announced on Monday in Luxembourg that bread prices increased by 18 percent on average in the EU in a year between August 2021 and August 2022. The increase in the Union in the previous year was recorded as 3 percent.

Thus, bread hikes were realized at a significantly higher rate than the consumer price index, which showed an increase of approximately 8 percent in the said one-year period.

In the statement made by Eurostat, the Ukrainian war, which affected the global grain market, was cited as the main reason for the increase in bread prices. In the statement, it was stated that Russia and Ukraine are important export countries in the grain sector.

Bread prices in EU countries increased at different rates. While bread increased by 8 percent in France and 10 percent in the Netherlands, the highest increase was detected in Hungary with 66 percent. In second place, Lithuania, the increase was 33 percent. Estonia and Slovakia ranked third with 32 percent. Bread increased by 17.5 percent in Germany. In Switzerland, which is not a member of the EU, the price of bread increased by about 4 percent.
