When the Channel Tunnel from France to England broke down, dozens of people were trapped in the tunnel. The video showing the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle passengers going from Calais to Folkestone exiting the tunnel using the “emergency exit road” became the agenda when it was shared on social media.
Passengers who had to leave their vehicles were put on another train after a while and reached Folkestone in Kent, England.
Eurotunnel spokesperson announced that the trains are now operating normally again.
In the incident that took place on Tuesday night, the alarm system of the train collapsed. Authorities stopped the train to investigate this situation. The spokesperson of Eurotunnel, which allows chauffeur-driven cars to pass to the opposite shore, stated that such incidents may occur, albeit rarely, on trains carrying private vehicles:
“The train was stopped at a controlled point and inspected. As a precaution, the passengers left their vehicles behind and were evacuated from the emergency exit and put on a different train.
“We brought the passengers to the terminal building and provided them with food and drink. Then the train that the passengers boarded in the first stage reached Folkestone and the passengers received their vehicles.”
Meanwhile, passengers say that there was a serious panic and some passengers were crying.
Passengers speaking to the BBC stated that the temperature was increasing and becoming suffocating after hours of waiting; He said it was an alarming time before they were told what had happened.
It took about 15 minutes for the passengers to finally get off the train and walk to a different train.
The main complaint of the passengers was the lack of regular and healthy information flow. Passengers state that this situation causes panic.
The 37.9 kilometer Channel Tunnel is the longest underwater section in the world.
Le Shuttle, on the other hand, announced that the victims should apply individually for compensation claims.
