Iran becomes a full member of Shanghai Cooperation Organization

Emir Abdullahiyan stated that the general secretary of the organization, Zhang Ming, signed a mutual agreement regarding full membership. Noting that the relations with the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization have moved to a new stage, Emir Abdullahiyan said, “There has been an important development for the development of cooperation in many fields from energy to economy and trade. We are now at a new stage in cooperation.”

Shanghai Cooperation Organization was established in 1996 when representatives of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan came together in Shanghai, China and signed the Agreement on Deepening Military Confidence in the Border Regions.

With the participation of Uzbekistan, Pakistan and India, the number of full members increased to eight. The full membership process of Iran, which joined the SCO as an observer member in 2005, was launched in September 2021.

Turkey is a dialogue partner in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
