In the shadow of the Russia-Ukraine War: Gazprom’s natural gas exports fell by 37.4 percent

Gazprom’s natural gas exports fell 37.4 percent

Russian energy company Gazprom reported that natural gas exports decreased by 37.4 percent in the 8 months of the year compared to the same period last year.

According to the statement made by Gazprom, the company’s natural gas production in the 8 months of the year decreased by 14.6 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, to 288.1 billion cubic meters.

In the said period, the company’s natural gas exports to countries outside the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) decreased by 37.4 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and became 82.2 billion cubic meters.

In the statement, it was pointed out that the highest level of occupancy rate in the underground natural gas storage facilities in Europe does not guarantee a reliable transition of the autumn-winter period in terms of energy security.

The European Union (EU) countries, which consume approximately 400 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, are working to fill their natural gas tanks in case the natural gas flow from Russia is interrupted due to the war in Ukraine.

Mechthild Wörsdörfer, Deputy Director General of the EU Commission’s energy unit, said in a statement today that natural gas warehouses in Europe have reached 80 percent fullness.

GAZPROM’S INTERRUPTIONS

Gazprom had reduced its natural gas shipments via Nord Stream by 60 percent on June 15, on the grounds that a Siemens turbine was not returned to Russia after maintenance in Canada. With the last decision, the capacity of 40 percent has been reduced to about 20 percent.

In the next statement, it was stated that as of 27 July, a maximum of 33 million cubic meters of natural gas can be shipped daily through the Portovaya compressor station. The daily gas carrying capacity of Nord Stream 1 is 160 million cubic meters.

Gazprom announced that it has stopped the flow of natural gas to Latvia.
