Famous actress sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering her mother

Canadian actor Ryan Grantham was sentenced to life in prison after confessing to killing his mother in March 2020.

A spokesperson for the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver told local media that the case was tragic and heartbreaking.

Prosecutors said Grantham, who starred in the movies Riverdale and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, shot her mother in the back while playing the piano at her home. He allegedly loaded his car the next day with three firearms, Molotov cocktails, ammunition and a map showing the home of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Grantham, 21, planned to kill Trudeau and planned a mass attack at Simon Fraser University or the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver, according to the CBC. However, after driving 200 km, he turned himself in to a police station and confessed to the murder, saying to the police that “I killed my mother”.

Grantham’s lawyer, Chris Johnson, told NBC News in a phone call Friday that his client had earlier expressed remorse in court. Johnson said that at the time of the murder, Grantham was dealing with untreated mental health issues.

According to the ruling, Grantham will not be able to apply for parole during the first 14 years of his life sentence.
