Brittle nails can be a sign of malnutrition, while ridges indicate over-cleaning. But some spots can be a warning sign of very serious diseases such as cancer.
Our nails can be a harbinger of even very dangerous diseases.
Our health is a whole and when radical changes occur, some signs can be seen in our hair, skin and nails.
The British Daily Mail newspaper, which talked to two dermatologists about the warning signs on the nails, explained the warning signs one by one.
Dr Shari Lipner from Cornell University drew attention to the importance of nails to detect a serious problem in the body early and made the following assessment;
‘It’s important for people to check their nails once a month in addition to trusting dermatologists.’
IS ROOT NAIL A SYMPTOM OF CANCER?
Most of us have bruises under our nails and we don’t care.
When skin cancer occurs under the nails (medically called subungual melanoma), a black or dark spot forms that does not go away.
“If the color is spreading under the nail, it’s usually a bad sign,” says Dr Christine Ko, MD, a dermatologist at Yale School of Medicine in Connecticut.
Underlining that there is no need to worry if the nail turns into normal color as the nail grows longer, Ko continued his words as follows;
‘But for skin cancer melanoma, the normal-looking nail color doesn’t appear, even as time passes.’
Skin cancers under the nail may also appear as a single dark line that does not disappear along the nail. Patients sometimes mistake these marks for a strip of paint or an ink mark.
CAN RED LINES BE EARLY SYMPTOMS OF HEART INFECTION?
Some people’s nails develop pale red or brownish streaks on part of the nail.
These are normally the result of nail injuries, but doctors warn that scars can be the first warning sign of a life-threatening heart condition called bacterial endocarditis, in which microorganisms infect the heart valves.
Pitting or NAIL The fracture is usually thought to be due to a bacterial or fungal infection. But dermatologists say it can be an early warning sign of arthritis in some cases.
LINES ON THE NAIL MAY SIGN YOU ARE WASHING YOUR HANDS TOO MUCH
Lines or vertical ridges on the nails that look like small thin strips are something most of us notice later in life.
While the condition known as onycorrheksis is a natural sign of aging, it can also be the result of washing too much hands or using hand sanitizer.
BRICKY NAILS A SIGN OF BAD NUTRITION
As nails become more protruding, they can become more brittle, making them more likely to break, split and peel.
Experts say this may be a sign of problems caused by malnutrition, such as iron deficiency.
