The world hasn’t seen commercial supersonic travel in nearly 20 years since Concorde retired in 2003.

But everything is about to change with the development of a new, environmentally friendly aircraft. Developed by the US-based Boom Supersonic, the world’s fastest aircraft, Overture, is preparing to change travels.

With 26 million hours of design and testing, Overture It is stated that it can cut the flight time from New York to London in half.

environmentally friendly

Capable of carrying 65 to 80 first-class passengers, Overture runs on 100% environmentally friendly and sustainable aviation fuel.

The updated design includes four engines to balance weight and temperature, while also reducing the size requirements of wing-mounted engines.

Boom says the smaller engines will reduce the thrust requirements for each. In this way, the aircraft will be able to operate more quietly.

Overture’s body size gets thinner from front to back. This minimizes drag and maximizes fuel efficiency at supersonic speeds.

Boom announced that so far, two airlines and the United States Air Force are looking to purchase Overture aircraft.

Also United Airlines; announced that it will purchase 15 aircraft and have an option to purchase 35 more once safety and operational requirements are met.

Travel times

So how long will it take to get to popular international cities with the Overture supersonic plane? Travel times with the said aircraft will be shortened as follows:

New York City to London:

  • Current travel time: about 7 hours
  • Overture travel time: 3 hours 30 minutes

Los Angeles to Sydney:

  • Current travel time: about 15 hours
  • Overture travel time: 8 hours

Tokyo to Seattle:

  • Current travel time: about 9 hours
  • Overture travel time: 4 hours 30 minutes

Flights will start in 2029

Overture commercial flights are planned to be launched in 2029.

Concordes, the world’s first supersonic aircraft, started flying in the 1960s in partnership with Britain and France.

Serving with only 14 aircraft, Concorde stopped its flights in 2003 due to rising maintenance costs and low demand.

The managers of Boom Supersonic company, which is preparing to launch Overture aircraft, say that thanks to the technologies used now, supersonic flights can be made at less cost and in a more sustainable way.
