The government, which set out for 10 thousand school projects, did not take into account inflation: Tenders were cancelled.

The depreciation of the Turkish lira and the rise in costs with high inflation hit not only the construction sector but also education. 10 thousand school projects announced by the Ministry of National Education (MEB) were affected by the cost crisis in the construction sector.

Setting out to achieve its goal of “3,000 kindergartens, 40 thousand kindergartens” by the end of the year, with new construction and repair of existing schools, the Ministry of National Education returned empty-handed from most of the tenders opened within the scope of the project. The Ministry of National Education announced that 3 thousand new kindergartens will be built within the scope of the project, for which a budget of 3 billion liras has been allocated, and 7 thousand primary schools have been included in the scope of improvement and repair. However, according to the tender data published on the Electronic Public Procurement Platform (EKAP), only two of the tenders made within the scope of “10 thousand school projects” were concluded, while 26 were cancelled.

FIVE MONTHS LEFT

According to EKAP data, 26 tenders for 10 thousand school projects were canceled until 17 August. The reason for the cancellation of nine of the tenders was stated as “the bids given were far above the allocated appropriation” and five of them were “not willing”. While 6 months have passed since the announcement of the project, the Ministry of National Education has only 5 months left to complete the construction of 3,000 kindergartens and the completion of the repair of 7,000 primary schools.
