23 year old Shanti De Cortewas in the departure hall of the Belgian airport with his schoolmates during the bomb attack carried out by ISIS terrorists on March 22, 2016. Shanti, who was 17 at the time, survived the explosion, which, along with two other explosions, killed 32 people and injured more than 300.

The young girl, who did not receive any physical damage in the explosions at that time, could not get rid of the panic attacks and depression she later experienced.

Anti-depressant took refuge

Shanti underwent rehabilitation treatment at a psychiatric hospital in her hometown of Antwerp, Belgium, and took a series of anti-depressant medications to help her. Unable to get rid of her dark thoughts, the young girl tried to kill herself twice in 2018 and 2020.

The young girl often took to social media to talk about her experiences after the bombing and talked about her struggle with her deteriorating mental health.

In one of his posts he said: “I take a few pills for breakfast. And I take 11 antidepressants a day. I can’t live without them. With all the pills I take, I feel like a ghost who can’t feel anything anymore. Maybe there are solutions other than drugs.”

‘I laughed and cried, loved and loved’

The woman, who suffered from psychological problems, opted for euthanasia, a legal procedure in Belgium earlier this year, and died on May 7, 2022, after two psychiatrists approved her request.

Shanti wrote on social media on the day of her euthanasia: “I laughed and cried. Until the last day. I loved and was allowed to feel what true love is. Now I will go in peace. Know that I miss you already.”

His mother told

The story of Shanti’s mother earlier this week MarielleIt came to the fore when the VRT channel, broadcasting in Belgium, told about the suffering of her daughter.

Marielle said: “It really broke her that day, she never felt safe after that. She didn’t want to go anywhere with other people out of fear. She also had frequent panic attacks and never recovered from it.”
