State of emergency declared in New York City over immigrant ‘crisis’

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that a state of emergency has been declared to contain the “crisis situation” that has occurred with the increasing number of immigrants.

Since April, 17,000 immigrants have arrived in the city from the southern border of the United States. Republican-led states such as Texas, Arizona and Florida in the south were sending immigrants on buses to New York, known as the Democrat stronghold.

At a press conference held on Friday, Adams stated that since the beginning of September, an average of 5-6 buses carrying immigrants have been coming to the city every day. The Mayor stated that one out of every five people in the city’s housing system has an asylum application.

Adams reported that most of the immigrants who came to the city were school-aged children and needed serious medical attention.

According to the BBC, the increase in immigration is expected to cost New York a billion dollars this fiscal year. The Mayor is seeking federal support to combat this situation.

“New Yorkers are angry,” said Adams.

“The city will have no budget for other needs,” Adams said.

Republicans say they sent these people to states under the control of Democrats, whose policies towards immigration are more moderate, to increase the pressure on President Joe Biden.
