last minute | Mahsa Amini died after being detained. Protests started: What is the latest situation in Iran?

Protests in Iran, which started with the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after being detained on the grounds that she did not comply with the headscarf rules, continue.

Police have been sent to the streets to end the protests, which have spread to at least 15 cities, according to local media reports.

Reports of internet outages were shared in some parts of the country. Communications Minister Issa Zarepour said there may be “some temporary restrictions on the internet in some places and at certain hours”.

Iranian state media reported that police used tear gas to disperse a crowd of 1,000 on Tuesday evening and arrested several. It was alleged that the demonstrators threw stones at the security forces and set fire to police vehicles.

In the past five days, protests have spread to at least 15 cities across the country after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the moral police for not wearing a hijab properly.

Irna reported that a police officer who was injured in the city of Shiraz died. A human rights group claimed that 450 people were injured and 500 people were arrested.

His chief criticizes the West

After the headscarf decision published by Iranian President Ibrahim Reisi, many women had taken off their headscarves to protest the decision for months.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Reisi made no mention of the protests or Amini by name, but criticized western countries for their response to “an incident under investigation in Iran”.

Iranian officials said they are investigating the cause of Amini’s death. But the protesters do not believe much in an internal investigation and are calling for the morality police to be removed.
