Iraq's refugee camp residents: Aid goes to Ukraine

The camps in Erbil and Duhok, Iraq, host refugees.

Residents in the camps say that aid to them has dwindled since the start of the Russia-Ukraine War, and the focus is on Ukraine.

“Aid directed to Ukraine”

As a result, it is stated that there are great problems in the supply of food, drinking water and the collection of garbage.

Pointing out that aid has been directed to Ukraine in the last period, residents are calling for help from the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations and Iraqi authorities.

“We are dehydrated, we cannot live because of the heat”

Abide Salih Ömer, a Syrian from Erbil’s Gevrgosk Camp, asked the UN to be with them.

Noting that their food is running low, the spread of the smell due to the accumulated garbage and heat poses a danger especially to children, Ömer said. “Not only these, sometimes we are left without water in these tents for 3-4 days and it is not possible to live in the heat.

The UN makes a decision every day. Now they are teaching our children outside the camp. We want their schools to be included in the camp.” said.

“How can I take care of myself and my daughter if the UN does not help”

Noting that they could not return to their homes due to the ongoing war in their country, Ömer said:

“How can I take care of myself and my daughter if the United Nations does not help. We have not been helped since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war. Aid to refugees must not be cut.”

Cafer expressed their hope that the Iraqi Immigration and Migration Administration will organize a special conference in Erbil, to which aid organizations affiliated to the UN were also invited to solve the problem.

“Aid organizations went to Ukraine when the war broke out”

Reminding that the Iraqi Ministry of Finance had previously announced that the economic situation in the country was good, Cafer said that this statement also caused the aid organizations in the region to leave.
