Europe is experiencing the driest period of the last 500 years

Experts from the Joint Research Center of the European Union (EU) Commission reported that Europe had a dry period of the last 500 years.

The report “Drought in Europe-August 2022”, prepared by the Joint Research Center (JRC) based on the analysis and data of the European Drought Observatory, has been published.

In the report, which stated that the alarming drought in July continued, it was noted that 47 percent of the EU lands still face a “warning” situation, while 17 percent of the EU has an “alarming” drought.

JCR experts reported that the ongoing drought is considered the driest period of the last 500 years.

Due to the drought, corn, soybean and sunflower crops are expected to be 15 percent below the average of the last 5 years.

It was stated that the lack of precipitation also decreased the water levels in the rivers across Europe, the production in hydroelectric power plants decreased, the cooling systems in other power plants and the river transport sector were adversely affected.

In the report, it was emphasized that warmer and drier weather than normal may continue until November 2022, especially for the Western Mediterranean region.
