CHINA CHARGER CHENG WEIHUA: An ugly political game

Describing Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan as a provocation, Weihua stated that the US acted against the international consensus as well as its commitments to China.

The visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Pelosi to Taiwan not only increased the tension between China and the USA, but also fueled the world’s concern that a situation similar to the war between Russia and Ukraine could occur in the Pacific. Cheng Weihua, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Ankara, evaluated the picture revealed by Pelosi’s visit, China’s position and the sanctions imposed on Taiwan to Milliyet.

After Nancy Pelosi’s visit, the eyes of the whole world turned to China and Taiwan. There are those who think that there may be a conflict similar to the one between Russia and Ukraine. Is this possible?

First of all, I need to correct a very very important point here. Taiwan is not a country. Taiwan is an indivisible part of Chinese territory. Pelosi’s visit is in serious violation of the one-China principle and the principles established by the three joint statements, including the joint statement on the protection of diplomatic relations between China and the United States. For this reason, it has dealt a major blow to the basis of political relations between China and the United States, and seriously threatened China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It has seriously damaged peace and stability on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, giving very false signals to the separatist forces in Taiwan. We characterize the visit as a malicious political provocation and an ugly political game.

The acceptance of the one-China principle is a prerequisite and basis for the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and all countries. If the one China principle is not accepted, China will not establish diplomatic relations with that country. In the joint declarations on the establishment of relations with China, the United States clearly and unequivocally acknowledged that the People’s Republic of China is China’s sole legitimate state. In this framework, the American people can maintain their relations with the Taiwanese people in cultural, commercial and other informal fields. In other words, it can continue its culture, trade and informal relations, but it does not make official, political contacts.

The Speaker of the US House of Representatives is the second in line for the US presidency. The visit of such an important political figure to Taiwan cannot be called an unofficial or cultural, business theme. America acted contrary to its commitment to China and also violated the consensus of the international community and international relations norms. This shows the world that it has once again lost its credibility.

CHINA CHARGER CHENG WEIHUA: An ugly political game

‘One country, two systems’

As for the Ukraine-Russia analogy… As the People’s Republic of China – let’s say mainland China, because Taiwan is also a part of China – we have been making great efforts for the peaceful unification of all China for a long time. We sincerely try to achieve the reunification of China with the greatest possible effort. Our late leader Deng Xiaoping introduced the idea of “one country, two systems” in the early 1980s. Currently implemented in Hong Kong. But this idea was first spoken of for Taiwan. The only prerequisite there is; The lands on both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to a single China. After the acceptance of this principle, everything else can be negotiated. We say that in the one country two systems principle, nothing will change in Taiwan’s entire administrative system, even the bureaucrats, even the soldiers, that the officials there can hold important positions in the central government. The only condition is the acceptance of the principle that the lands on both sides of the strait belong to China. There is a “1992 Consensus” on this issue, and it says there “One China on both sides of the Taiwan Strait will maintain the principle”.

‘We have to give the necessary punishment’

Tsai Ing-wen, the current head of Taiwan’s administration, and his party, the “Democratic Progressive Party”, wrote Taiwan’s independence in the party charter. So right now in Taiwan, there are some stubborn Taiwan independence forces and behind it foreign powers like America. We are trying to achieve the peaceful reunification of China as much as possible. But if they stubbornly refuse to do so, then we will not give up the military option either. Of course, we should give the necessary punishment to the party that constantly says that it is after Taiwan’s independence, that invites Pelosi to Taiwan, that causes serious damage to China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

There are comments that Pelosi planned this visit before the fall Communist Party Congress. Do you think so?

America has been playing the Taiwan card for a long time already. There was even the Xinjiang-Uyghur issue, the Hong-Kong issue. Now there is the Taiwan issue. When you look at it as a chain, it clearly shows that there is ulterior motive. Playing Taiwan cards hinders the rise and development of China. That’s why Pelosi’s visit is a very serious political provocation. Latter; America’s domestic politics and politicians serve their own interests. Pelosi is 82-83 years old and wants to leave a political legacy. He is making propaganda for the American public.

The US accuses China of escalating tensions.

America both accuses China of trying to escalate the tension and argues that China’s suspension of some cooperation mechanisms affects the whole world. America does not represent the whole world. Before Pelosi’s visit, we made many attempts and made many warnings about cooperation mechanisms with the United States. But they ignored it and turned a blind eye. On the one hand, they are harming the interests of China, which they attach great importance to, and on the other hand, they demand that we support and cooperate with them in matters that they care about. You hit me and then you want me to give you what you want. Will this happen? But this is in line with America’s hegemony and mentality. Because he always thinks so, but China doesn’t do it.

CHINA CHARGER CHENG WEIHUA: An ugly political game

Weihua, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Ankara, answered the questions of Milliyet Ankara Representative Didem Özel Tümer.

‘Our reaction is justified, legal and appropriate’

Who created this crisis?

Without Pelosi’s visit, this crisis would not have arisen. Now they want China to remain silent and unresponsive in the face of their grave political provocations. It is not possible. Responsibility for today’s tension rests entirely with the United States and Taiwan’s government, which is gradually leading Taiwan to independence. They also have to bear the consequences. The reactions of the Chinese side; justified, legal and appropriate.

You have made some sanction decisions against Taiwan. Like not sending sand, restricting some export products… Wouldn’t these sanctions get you further away from Taiwan?

The sanctions are not against the Taiwanese people. But in a way, it will be better understood how much the mainland of China provides, benefits and supports Taiwan in economic areas. They will understand. The reunification of Taiwan with mainland China, if achieved, will also show how much benefit it will bring for Taiwan side, and people will understand it.
