Putin bids farewell to Gorbachev

President of Russia Vladimir Putinbid farewell to Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the former Soviet Union.

Putin visited the coffin of Gorbachev, who died at the age of 91, with a bouquet of flowers in his hand.

WILL NOT ATTEND THE FUNERAL CEREMONY

The Kremlin has announced that Putin will not be able to attend Saturday’s funeral for Gorbachev.

Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin visited the Moscow hospital where Gorbachev’s dead body was kept, and that he was not available to attend the farewell ceremony on Saturday.

Putin shared a message of condolence on Gorbachev’s death yesterday. In his message, he stated that Gorbachev ‘had a great influence on world history’ and said that he ‘deeply understood how important his reforms were’.

Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also said in a statement that Putin expressed his “deepest condolences” regarding Gorbachev’s death.
