‘Operation Wealth’ in Antalya

It’s an old fashioned one I remember from my childhood. ‘spy movie’ There is tradition. especially the British James Bond this is a format they have shaped with their films… These films take place in different countries and in very elegant venues. to ultra-rich people or ‘high society’Sections from his life are included. We come across luxury jets, helicopters, magnificent yachts, beautiful houses and stylish cars. The main character is usually a male protagonist working for the secret service of a country such as England or the USA. He may not be rich, but he has a lifestyle that does not look for the rich. He does not like to take orders from his superiors, he does everything in his own way. The heroic agent, whose identity is undercover, has no trouble infiltrating the bad guys with his trusted team, and usually saves the world from big trouble every time… He is idealistic and altruistic, even though he tries not to look like it.

Most of the shooting took place in Antalya. ‘Operation Fortune’ (Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre) this is exactly such a movie… The opening scene that starts with footsteps also brings to mind those old secret agent movies. During the long walk inside the state building, the terrorist attack on a technology institution with parallel fiction and from there ‘something’ We witness the theft. The British state is aware of the operation, but cannot learn what was stolen. All they know is that whatever was stolen is incredibly valuable, because they find that everyone is after it and sacrificing huge sums of money to buy it. They decide that they have no choice but to seize such a valuable property as soon as possible. relevant departments of the state ‘stealing stolen property’ from the outside, as they thought it would be too heavy for them. ‘piece head’ to find a working agent Nathan (Cary Elwes) they are meeting with. At the beginning of the movie, we hear footsteps; Nathan, walking serious, determined and dignified, is the only person he wants to work with. Orson Fortune (Jason Statham) says it is. senior government official Norman (Eddie Marsan) on the other hand, says that Orson is too expensive and problematic, especially with his luxury expenses, but he has to accept it out of desperation. Orson, who is vacationing in Morocco because of his cloud phobia, is also initially reluctant to accept the offer. In fact, instead of John, whom he had been accustomed to for years. Sarah Fidel (Aubrey Plaza) He also doesn’t like that a hacker he doesn’t know is included in the team. But Nathan is quick to accept the job because of the luxury jets and expensive wines he promises. The super-rich at the key point of the operation Greg Simmondsto (Hugh Grant) Hollywood action star that he admires so that he can get closer Danny Francescoto (Josh Hartnett) they are taking the first step. Then they find themselves in an intrigue, involving a Ukrainian criminal gang, which stretches all the way to Antalya. They are trying to decipher not only why the mystery item is so valuable, but also the identity of the buyer. Meanwhile, starting with their first operation at Madrid airport, they realize that the British government has assigned another team with them…

As a director and screenwriter Guy Ritchie‘s signature, of course, raises hopes from the very beginning. You’d guess that Ritchie will bring a fresh take on the genre, or at least a sense of humor, a black comedy vibe. But soon You see that ‘Operation Wealth’ proceeds on a flat, unpretentious and mediocre story. Moreover, unfortunately, there is not a very bright film in terms of directorial performance. So much so that it is hard to believe that the film belongs to Ritchie without his signature.

His first two films are among the bright rings of the British crime film tradition. ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ (1998) and ‘Snatch’ (2000) aside from that, Ritchie is a director who always achieves certain levels, even in his films that do not receive high ratings from critics. He makes films that are at least formally or otherwise ambitious. For example, ‘The Gentlemen’ (2019) It is a film full of screenplays and sometimes brilliant inventions. ‘Code Name: UNCLE’ (The Man from UNCLE – 2015) or ‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’ (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword – 2017) They are films that bring different formal approaches to their subgenres. The ‘Operation Wealth’, on the other hand, stands apart from all these, almost ‘friends can see you at shopping’ It’s a mediocre movie. Undoubtedly, the production quality is high; We are watching a movie that fulfills the expectations of the audience from the mainstream action cinema, but cannot reveal its own character.

The most important advantage of ‘Operation Fortune’ in the eyes of the audience is the cast. There are famous names such as Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett, Hugh Grant, Eddie Marsan, especially action star Jason Statham in the cast. It’s clear that Ritchie and the producers relied heavily on these actors to deliver the movie worldwide. But it’s a little difficult for us to talk about a movie that is notable for its acting quality. Josh Hartnett as the Hollywood action star and Hugh Grant as the wealthy businessman bring a certain sense of comedy to the film. We see that Jason Statham and Aubrey Plaza also give humorous performances. After all, they all ‘light and funny movie’ They’re definitely in the mood.

The film, which appears in the records as a US-Chinese co-production, The most interesting aspects for the audience in Turkey are that most of the shooting took place in Antalya and that familiar actors, especially Tim Seyfi, Ergun Kuyucu, Kaan Urgancıoğlu, took part in the film. It should be noted that Tim Seyfi, who plays Alexander from the criminal gang, took longer in the movie and gave a successful performance. Another interesting point is that Turkish actors, including Urgancıoğlu, usually portray characters from other nationalities… It is difficult to estimate the level of support for the project from Turkey, but it is certain that Eastern Europeans, not Turks, are associated with crime in the film.

By the way, it should be noted that the vision date of the film was postponed for a long time due to the Russia-Ukraine War. Obviously, the producers did not want to appear in front of the audience with a movie that featured a Ukrainian-origin criminal gang at the beginning of the war.

In particular, when you examine the tagline of “Operation Servet”, which is a candidate to attract attention with its action shots in Antalya Kaleiçi, you come across many names from Turkey behind the camera. In summary, the most interesting aspect of the film for us is that it was shot in Antalya and the familiar local names in the team…
