News follow-up reason for watching TV

Ipsos Research company investigated the rate of watching television, reading print broadcasts, watching TV series on digital platforms, and people’s content preferences with the “Guide to Understanding Turkey” study. The study revealed that although the rate of watching Youtube and digital platforms has increased in the last two years, television is the most preferred medium. Sidar Gedik, CEO of Ipsos Turkey, said, “News watching is still the most important reason for TV viewers.” commented.

Ipsos Research Company conducted a “Comprehension Guide to Turkey” study. Within the scope of the study, people’s watching television, reading print, watching TV series and movies on digital platforms and their content preferences were investigated.

The rate of those who said that they watch television every day was 69 percent. While the rate of those who said they watched television every day until 2018 was over 80 percent, it decreased to 74 percent in 2020 and 69 percent in 2022. However, TV remains the most preferred medium for news.

One out of every two people watches a series on Youtube

When asked which platforms are used to watch TV series, while 45 percent of the society said TV in 2020, this rate has decreased to 35 percent in 2022. Watching series from different platforms instead of TV has increased significantly. Today, one out of every two people states that they watch TV series on Youtube, while the rate of those who say they watch TV series on Netflix has increased from 9 percent to 21 percent.

Regarding the research, Sidar GEDİK, CEO of Ipsos Turkey, said, “News monitoring is still the most important reason for TV viewers. In 2017, the word of the year was “Fake News”. In a worldwide survey conducted by Ipsos a few years ago, TV ranks first in the ranking of being a reliable news source. There was no major change in this picture in the following period. The research of the Guide to Understanding Turkey shows that being able to access news is still the foremost motivation in our country, not only for TV viewers but also for newspaper readers.
