According to the compilation made from the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) due to the World Elderly Day, It has been revealed that the proportion of the elderly population in Turkey’s total population is constantly increasing.

In the period of 2017-2021, the elderly population in Turkey increased by 19.57 percent from 6 million 895 thousand 385 people to 8 million 245 thousand 124 people.

In terms of gender, while the number of male elderly people was 3 million 33 thousand 433 in 2017, it was 3 million 654 thousand 709 in 2021. While the number of elderly women was 3 million 861 thousand 952 people in 2017, it was recorded as 4 million 590 thousand 415 people in 2021.
Addiction status of the elderly
It has been observed that the elderly dependency ratio, which expresses the number of elderly people per 100 people of working age, has increased continuously in 5 years. This rate, which was 12.6 percent in 2017, was calculated as 12.9 percent in 2018, 13.4 percent in 2019, 14.1 percent in 2020 and 14.3 percent in 2021.
The elderly population of the world: 764 million person
While the world population was determined as 7 billion 831 million 718 thousand 605 in 2021, 764 million 321 thousand 142 people, which corresponds to 9.8 percent of these people, were recorded as the “old population”.
As of last year, the number of elderly individuals in Turkey has surpassed the total population of 67 countries, including countries such as Singapore, Norway, Iceland, Finland and Bulgaria.
China ranks first in the number of elderly people in the world
On the other hand, last year, China took the first place in the elderly population with 183 million 919 thousand 14 people, followed by India with 95 million 829 thousand 843 people and the USA with 57 million 842 thousand 422 people.
