The Deputy Head of the Ukrainian State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate, Oleh Korikov, recently used expressions about the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant under Russian control, which is located on Ukrainian territory, “If there are reasons for the closure of the power plant, we can shut down the power plant.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) published a report after its visit to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant located in Ukraine, which has been under the control of Russia since last March. In the report, it was pointed out that the Hmelnitskaya, Rovenskaya and Yujno-Ukrainskaya Nuclear Power Plants continued their normal operations, but there was a risky situation at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant.

In the report, it was emphasized that important infrastructures such as communication infrastructure should be established in order to establish a direct connection to the Zaporizhia NPP in order to eliminate possible risks. “It only deepens the existing problems of supporting nuclear security and ensuring that any incident in the field of nuclear security is effectively responded to at the local, regional, national and international levels.”

Built between 1984 and 1995, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is Europe’s largest and the world’s ninth largest nuclear power plant. The plant, which has six reactors producing 950 MW each and a total output of 5,700 MW, produces a quarter of Ukraine’s energy.

On April 26, 1986, the city of Chernobyl, 130 kilometers north of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, which was part of the Soviet Union at that time, was the scene of one of the most terrible environmental disasters in human history.

The explosion at the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near the city of Pripyat released an amount of radiation equal to 50 times the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

After the explosion, clouds full of radioactive material affected many countries, including Turkey, and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster caused the death of approximately 200,000 people directly or indirectly, according to some independent studies.
