IAEA WARNED ‘A SECURITY ZONE MUST BE ESTABLISHED IMMEDIATELY’
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) published a report after its visit to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant located in Ukraine, which has been under the control of Russia since last March. In the report, it was pointed out that the Hmelnitskaya, Rovenskaya and Yujno-Ukrainskaya Nuclear Power Plants continued their normal operations, but there was a risky situation at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant.
In the report, it was emphasized that important infrastructures such as communication infrastructure should be established in order to establish a direct connection to the Zaporizhia NPP in order to eliminate possible risks. “It only deepens the existing problems of supporting nuclear security and ensuring that any incident in the field of nuclear security is effectively responded to at the local, regional, national and international levels.”
WHY IS THIS POWER PLANT IMPORTANT?
Built between 1984 and 1995, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is Europe’s largest and the world’s ninth largest nuclear power plant. The plant, which has six reactors producing 950 MW each and a total output of 5,700 MW, produces a quarter of Ukraine’s energy.
