Deniz Berktay reports from Kiev: ‘This is a general war’

As I have mentioned before, this war continues between Russia and Ukraine on the one hand, and it is a Russia-West war on the other hand. What happens is Ukraine, but the weapons of the West are used. US officials also confirmed that the counter-attack launched by Ukraine was prepared together with the US.

As Russia begins the new legislative year, the main issue on the agenda is; the ongoing war and the unexpected defeat of the Russian army near Kharkov. While the ruling United Russia Party MPs chose not to talk about it, the other three parties said that the war did not go as the Russian administration expected. Ennadi Zyuganov, the leader of the Russian Communist Party, said that the war started as a “Ukraine Special Operation” as it is said in Russia, but it turned into a general war in which the whole West participated in the last two months, and said that Russia did not have the luxury of losing this war. Similar views are expressed by Justice Russia Party Leader Serey Mironov and Liberal Democratic Party President Leonid Slutski. The opposition insists on economic mobilization, if not military mobilisation. Therefore, in Russia, at least the parliamentary opposition advocates not withdrawing from the war because of Russia’s failures in the war, but on the contrary continuing the war until the end. Therefore, it is unrealistic to expect Western sanctions to lead to a change in Russia, at least at the moment.

One of those who say that the war has turned into a general character is Valeri Zaluzhny, the Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine. In his article written last week, Zaluzhny says that the Ukrainian army has achieved some success, but uses a more cautious language than the politicians about the general situation of the war, and says that Russia may want to attack Ukraine from the Kherson direction in the direction of Odessa in the winter and cut off all connection of Ukraine with the Black Sea. Zaluzhny states that the society in Russia supports the war and that this attitude will not change until the Russian lands are directly targeted by missiles, and he wants long-range missiles from the West. The statements of the parties show that this winter will be harsh.
